Flavorizing is Fun

Flavorizing is Fun

Enjoy this stage. Express yourself and find flavors that speak to you. Here are some of my favorites (per 16oz bottle):

  • Goji Goddess = 1 tsp goji berries, 1 tsp chopped ginger (fresh, dried or juiced)
  • Strawberry Lemonade = 1 whole strawberry cut up, ½ tsp fresh squeezed lemon juice (must be fresh!)
  • Herbal Delight = a few pieces of fresh herbs – thyme, basil, oregano, rosemary, lavender, mint – try a couple of different herbs together for a refreshing blend

Okay, you’ve been reading up and following closely. But even so, you are bound to make mistakes when brewing. In honor of our 5th day together, I present:

THE TOP 5 Mistakes Made By New Brewers
(or even Experienced Brewers)
Countdown!!

#5. Not reading all the directions

#4. Brewing in too cold a location

#3. Using too little sugar in the sweet tea

#2. Rushing the SCOBY into hot nutrient solution

…and a drumroll, please….STILL #1 by a VERY LARGE MARGIN,
the UNDISPUTED CHAMPION OF MISTAKES…

#1. Disturbing the Kombucha during the initial 7-day brew period.

Many novice brewers become concerned when they first see something growing on the surface of their Kombucha. If you do look at the Kombucha brew, please understand that what you will see forming on the surface of the brew is not usually pretty to look at.

What you see is the beginnings of a new Kombucha mushroom and should not be disturbed. It is almost certainly not mold. To avoid aggravating both yourself and the baby culture, leave it alone until the 7th day.
